Postal strikes hit 10% of Germany’s delivery, further strikes are planned
Deutsche Post reported on Friday that the strike of about 77,000 postal workers suffered a limited number of strikes, resulting in 10% of letters and parcels not reaching their destinations as planned.
It said delivery will be postponed until Saturday. The DHL subsidiary said the delayed mail will be delivered in the next few days.
Union union Verdi has repeatedly summoned its members in recent weeks to support compensation needs, beyond Deutsche Post’s offer.
A strike on Wednesday left one quarter of all packages not delivered as planned. Further strikes are planned on Saturday.
Verdi chief negotiator Andrea Kocsis said workers showed companies that they expected much more than they would have offered through such expanded limited strike action.
She said Germany’s second-largest coalition has about 1.9 million members and the Deutsche Post is expected to raise its offer in the fourth round of negotiations next week.
Verdi demands a 7% increase in new contracts for Deutsche Post’s 170,000 postal and logistics workers. It also calls for additional paid leave to make up for the increased workload.
Deutsche Post will offer 1.8% initially, then another 2% in a 27-month contract.
The dialogue between the two sides will enter their fourth round on Monday. Verdi has called for a duplicate temporary strike in recent weeks, resulting in delivery.
Deutsche Post believes that a significant increase is not feasible in the face of high investment costs, and as digitalization replaces physical mail, fewer letters are delivered.
