Atlanta approved $1.4 million settlement for the acquittal of the 2019 fatal shooting.

Atlanta, Georgia City Council voted unanimously on Monday to pass a former Atlanta police officer who was acquitted in a fatal shooting in 2019.
According to Fox 5 Atlanta, the city council has agreed to settle with Oliver Simmonds for $1.4 million.
In 2022, Simmonds was charged with felony murder, aggravated the attack with a deadly weapon, and a fatal shooting occurred at a gas station near Castlebury Hill on July 15, 2019.

The jury found Simmonds not guilty after four hours of deliberation following the September 2023 trial.
Simmonds was assigned to the executive protection department of then-Democratic Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms, and was suitable for the shooting, wearing plain clothes.

He pumped oil at the Shell Station near the intersection of McDaniel and White Hall streets when he was in contact with 18-year-old D’Ettrick Griffin.
According to police, Griffin jumped into the driver’s seat of Simmonds’ unmarked police SUV and tried to drive away. Simmonds then fired a gun at Griffin and shot the teenager, who soon hit the vehicle.

Griffin died of the injuries he suffered in the incident.
