Possible measles exposure in two New Mexico counties

New Mexico (KRQE) – According to the New Mexico Health Department, a Texas resident is infected with measles passing through Guadalupe and Valencia counties. Now it is recommended that the public be in the listed schedules that if they are in these locations, they may be exposed to measles:

  • Saturday, March 8, 2pm to 4:30pm at TA Travel Center on 2634 US Route 66 in Santa Rosa

  • Saturday and Sunday, March 8-9 at Wyndham in 1919 The Days Inn at Los Lunas at Main St. SW

  • Sunday, March 9, from noon to 3:30 pm at Sopa Restaurant in Bosque Farms Boulevard in Bosque Farms

  • Monday, March 10, 8am to 12:30pm at Our Lady of the Catholic Church in Guadalupe, Peralta 3674 NM-47

If you visited these places within a specified time frame and you are not vaccinated or unsure of your identity, you should check the vaccination records and get stuck in any missing doses, the health department said.

Measles symptoms can start with a cough, runny nose, and red eyes, and then develop into a fever and rash before spreading on the body.

“Recent cases of measles in Texas and New Mexico are reminded to be alert,” said Dr. Miranda Durham, chief medical officer of NMDOH. “When people with measles travel, the virus can spread to unprotected communities – especially during high-travel times such as spring break. Vaccination is our strongest defense: one dose is 93% effective and two doses are 97% effective.”

According to NMDOH, there are currently 38 cases of measles in New Mexico. These outbreaks are limited to Lea and Eddy counties in the southeastern part of the state.

Valencia County is located in the south of Bernalillo County, while Guadalupe County is located east of Albuquerque.
