Trump accuses big media of “illegal” reports, almost abolishing VOA

President Trump has been opposing the railings of fake news for the past decade, and the phrase is now deeply embedded in our culture.

He accused the media of ruthlessly prejudiced against him – which was largely correct – and summoned journalists by name. He sued ABC News (paid him $16 million), CBS and DES Moines Register and other channels.

He accused Politico of getting payments for negatively covering him—these were regular subscriptions, and the New York Times—and then canceled many subscriptions.

But Trump has gone further than ever in a controversial Justice Department speech. He said the Times, the Washington Post and major networks were involved in the “illegal” reporting.

The president has not specified what is illegal. But maybe there is a short distance between Trump’s allegations and future prosecutions?

The Ministry of Justice’s speech caused heavy reports. The Times said he “turned from his prepared remarks to lawyers and former prosecutors, named the location of fair justice administration. He also accused the department’s previous leaders of trying to destroy him and declared former President Joseph R. Biden Jr.

The Post quoted Trump as saying that his enemies “against another scam and false action that violated the law on a huge scale, persecuted my family, employees and supporters, raided my home, Mary Marg, and did everything possible to prevent me from becoming president of the United States.” The paper added: “The president rarely visited the Justice Department, which has maintained safeguards between the White House and law enforcement agencies in the post-Watergate era to ensure that politics does not interfere with law enforcement investigations.”

But that’s the fascinating part.

The Times and the Post did not mention Trump’s “illegal” reporting charges. Not as much as the paragraph. It’s impossible to squeeze it in (I’m joking, because in the digital age, space is infinite).

I saw two possible explanations.

One of them is that they were offended by the president’s allegations, and they thought it was so wrong that they didn’t want to give it any oxygen and share it with readers. In other words, it is best to deflect them when the president shoots arrows at you.

Another is their concern that given Trump’s history of civil litigation, there may be prosecutions on the road – and do not want to cross him on this issue. In short, they were frightened by the president.

But that’s the fact: If two outstanding American newspapers would not blame illegality, who would it be? By reviewing Trump’s comments, how do they expect any support when they don’t support themselves?

Meanwhile, over the weekend, the president almost canceled the U.S. and Radio Europe’s voice with executive orders against his parent company – its special adviser is former Arizona candidate Kari Lake.

Trump ordered 1,300 journalists, executives and other staff to take indefinite leave. His argument is that they are part of the radical left. He was a long-time critic of VOA, once called it the “voice of the Soviet Union.”

VOA’s Pentagon correspondent Carla Babb posted this: “The Communist Party, the dictator and Ayatollahs will celebrate VOA’s silence, and their lies are revealed.”

The VOA was launched during World War II and credited for decades of successful campaigns against enemy propaganda. But given Trump’s friendly relations with Vladimir Putin, it is a legitimate debate today about who the “enemy” is.

More importantly, people weren’t crowded around the radio like they did in 1942.
