Mark Carney wins the race to replace Justin Trudeau as Canadian Prime Minister

Former Bank of England Governor Mark Carney won the match to replace Justin Trudeau as Canadian Prime Minister and Liberal Leader.

Carney, 59, will lead the party to the next general election, which is expected to be called in the coming weeks.

Carney lashed out at U.S. President Donald Trump, who ignited a trade war with Canada and commented on making the country the 51st state in his victory speech.

Carney, who never served in the elected office, was in power when it was instability in Canada. Liberals have been lagging behind conservatives in polls, although they have closed the gap since the trade war with Trump began.

After Trudeau resigned after nearly a decade of his tenure at Trudeau, the leadership game began. He faces internal pressure to have deep unpopularity with the voters.

Carney is expected to be sworn in as prime minister in the coming days and will lead the parliament’s minority government.

He could call the SNAP election himself, or the opposition could force a person with an unconfident vote later this month.

Carney said after being declared the winner on Sunday night: “Canadians know that new threats require new ideas and new plans.

“They know that new challenges require new leadership. Canadians want positive leadership to end the division and help us build together.”

He said on Trump that the U.S. president has signed “unreasonable tariffs” to Canada.

“He is attacking Canadian workers, families and businesses,” Carney said. “We can’t let him succeed.”

He said his administration will pay tariffs on U.S. imports “until Americans show respect to us.”
