Egyptian officials recently announced the discovery of a 3,000-year-old mining complex that includes remnants of ancient houses, workshops and even bathrooms.
Egypt’s Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities reported that excavations were conducted in the southwest of the town of Marsa Alam, the Red Sea Province, according to a Facebook post published on February 25.
Among these discoveries, there is a body of a mining camp that dates back to three thousand years, the statement explained. It includes “a remnant of a complete factory that extracts gold from quartz veins”, a translated version of the statement.
The camp is exquisite and has “milling, grinding and crushing quartz stone, filtering and sedimentation basin into clay furnaces and golden extraction”.

Interestingly, the miners’ residential areas were also found, as well as “the workshops in the Roman and Islamic era, mining areas, places of worship, administrative buildings, Ptolemy bathrooms, and architectural elements”.
Archaeologists have also discovered 628 ostrichs, which are fragments of pottery and stone used to write and draw. Ostraca was written in a hieroglyphic script with the Egyptian demotic and Greek.

The excavator also unearthed several Ptolemaic bronze coins, plus “a large number of clay statues depicting human and animal forms from the Greece and Roman period, while small stone statues, some incomplete bastet and harpocrates, and five dining tables from the Tolema era.”
“In addition, pottery of various sizes, shapes and uses were found, including pottery of everyday life, perfumes, medicines and aromas, as well as collections of beads made from gemstones and decorative tools made from refined shells,” the Facebook post added.

The site is located near Sukari Gold Mine, which opened in 2009, and officials noted that the unearthed artifacts were moved to “safe areas” away from modern mining activities.
The Secretary-General of the Supreme Ancient Physics Council pointed out the significance of the project in a statement and said it extended the “understanding of the ancient Egyptians’ technology to extract gold from rocks, [helped historians gain] Better understand the social, religious and economic life of miners in the eastern desert industrial city throughout the era. ”

Sherif Fathy’s Minister of Tourism and Antiquities “expressed happiness for the happiness of discovery,” he said, “revealed the historical secrets of the region.”
“[Fathy] The statement added that the project is part of the ministry’s commitment to protecting Egypt’s cultural heritage while aligning with the Egyptian state’s development and economic project plans. ”
The latest discovery is one of many found in Egypt so far in 2025. Last month, archaeologists encountered the long-standing tomb of King Thutmose II, the first royal tomb discovery since 1922.
