A Republican in New Jersey proposed legislation to change the Delaware Bay to the “New Jersey Bay”, which seemed inspired by President Donald Trump’s executive order to change the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of the United States.
NJ.com reported that the measure proposed by Republican state Senator Michael Testa on Thursday would order state agencies to use the “New Jersey Bay” in publications, signage, websites and materials to reflect the new designation and notify relevant federal entities.
“I’m looking at the strong fishing industry – the commercial fishing industry and the entertainment industry in New Jersey,” he told The Outlet. “I think we have to call the fact that we fish in the Bay of Delaware — they claim it’s long enough.”
Testa represents Cape Town County, Mei County on the border of the bay.

“It’s time to make New Jersey great again!” Testa wrote on X.
According to the Delaware government website, the bay is an important water for tourism, commerce and travel in New Jersey, with its name since 1610 being the Southern Neighbor and named after the third Baron de la Warr, Thomas West, who ruled the Virginia colony.
The proposed legislation comes after Trump signed an order in January to rename the northern Gulf of Mexico to the U.S. Gulf. Waters already share borders between the United States and Mexico, and Trump’s order only carries authority within the United States
Last month, the U.S. House Republicans passed the U.S. Bay Act, the first step in codifying Trump’s order in the U.S., which is now awaiting considerations in the Senate.

Trump’s order also prompted Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont to jokingly suggest modifying Long Island’s voice to “Connecticut Voice.”
Lamont released on X in February, released the tag of New York Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul on X and changed the name to the renamed map with the sound, marking the map as “Although the map changes, it’s an idea.”
