Atlanta-based Delta Airlines confirmed that more than 90 flights were diverted or delayed due to intense thunderstorms, winds and hail on Friday night.

They also said technicians worked all night to complete hail inspections on about 100 planes. Almost all of this will return to service on Saturday.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed that due to strong winds, it was necessary to evacuate the air traffic control tower at the airport on Friday night. Some controllers stay in the tower and continue to operate.

It was all during a busy July 4 trip, when airport officials estimated more than 4 million people would pass through Hartsfield-Jackson.
