Organized by Intrepid Travel, the company is known for its group trips focusing on sustainability, cultural immersion and local connections, and the unknown expedition began in Harare, Zimbabwe and ended in Ile De Mozambique, Mozambique.

No map, no timetable – only 1,500 miles of adventure
The unknown expedition in 2026 begins in Harare, Zimbabwe and ends in Ile De Mozambique, Mozambique. Travelers will cover approximately 1,500 miles of the entire southern Africa in 15 days. No trip will be released in advance.
Harare is the capital Zimbabwe, while Ile de Mozambique is a small coral island near the northern coast of Africa. Once a key port in the Indian Ocean trade network, the island is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site where faded colonial buildings, stone statues and slow coastal rhythms set the tone for everyday life.
The land route between the two cities spans thousands of miles along woodland, savanna and historical routes.
Participants will be guided by one of Intrepid’s most experienced leaders, mainly traveling by land trucks and staying in accommodation from tents to local hotels.
The journey involves swimming in waterfalls, hiking the mountains and connecting with locals, focusing on culture, history and regional cuisine.
There are two plans to set out: July 29 and August 12, 2026. The first trip will be reserved for returning to the Fearless Traveler.
“This itinerary is brave in every word and I believe it will be our best mysterious journey,” said Erica Kritikides, Experience General Manager at Intrepid Travel.
A format built with curiosity
Intrepid’s “unauthorized” travel concept was launched in 2018, when the company conducted two mysterious trips through Kazakhstan, the Altai region of Russia and Mongolia. 34 travelers joined the departure staff and received more than 1,000 applications in 10 days. The first trip was filled in 16 hours. According to the company, interest in mysterious travel continues to grow.
“This mysterious journey pierces the nostalgic journey of our earliest courageous journey, each of which brings surprises and unknown elements,” Kriti Kiddes said. “It attracts the bravest travelers, [especially] Those with a sense of adventure are ready to take a leap of faith, far beyond the path that is rarely visited. ”

What did the travelers say about the past
Past participants described the original journey as transformative.
“This unknown trip sparked my sense of adventure,” said Meredith Quick, 68, Melbourne. “The premise is to sign a trip to the unknown. My friends questioned my travel decision, but when I came back to tell them about the adventure I experienced with nine other other travelers willing to take risks, they quickly envied.”
Quick, the long-time brave traveler took part in the original unknown tour of 2018. Throughout the journey, the group crossed three countries, lived in local homes, met indigenous communities, and hiked through remote landscapes.
