Steam adds more accessibility features

Steam has new features that improve accessibility in the latest betas of gaming clients. The platform is adding a sliding scale to adjust the UI, a high contrast mode to make text and buttons more different from the background, and reduce motion settings to disable selected animation and page transitions. These three features can be used for devices running Steamos and Steam’s large-picture mode, which displays a full-screen user interface for easier visibility.

Additionally, Steamos devices are providing support for screen readers. This function adjusts the volume, rate and pitch of the audio output. The new beta also provides a color filter for Steamos devices, allowing users to select modes of grayscale, invert brightness, or invert color. This change in color to visual output applies to Steam clients and games. Currently, there are only Steam Deck and Lenovo Legion Go S Run Valve’s game-centric operating systems, but the company obviously plans to add more devices in the future.

“These new settings are just the first available settings for the accessibility features we are working on, and we’re excited to have more tools in the hands of players,” the company said in a blog post that announced a new update.
