Illinois is expected to spend $2.5 billion on immigration, most of which has poured into health care costs, according to a new report.

The Illinois Institute for Public Policy is a supervisory think tank that tracks public policy decisions in the state and released a report Monday that compiles all the fees offered to immigrants who support the state’s flooded state.

The Illinois Public Policy Institute added in the $2.5 billion that taxpayers’ funds were allocated to health care and “immigration welcome centers, housing, emergency food, resettlement services and rental assistance.” The report added that since 2023, Illinois has allocated $478 million through the Dignity Initiative to obtain “immigration benefits.”

The report further explained that the Illinois government spent more than $1.6 billion on both programs to cover health care costs for immigrants and was reported by the Auditor General’s Office.

One of the plans is that health benefits for immigrant adults aged 42-64 have been cut due to “budget restrictions,” which ended on July 1, according to the Illinois Department of Health Care and Family Services. Another program for serving the elderly will continue.

The audit found that the costs of these plans far exceeded the expected costs.

“Initially, it was estimated that the senior plan would cost $224 million. The auditors found that actual spending was $412.3 million higher than expected 84%.”

“In 2023 alone, the total cost exceeded the expected spending by more than $400 million, enough to cover up the entire homeless person in Illinois for a year.”

The report was testified in Congress Thursday to address the state’s asylum policy.

“I have seen first-hand how states have to bear the consequences of a broken immigration system. I am proud of how we react. … A safe and compassionate immigration policy, I think it is crucial,” Pritzker said in his opening speech.

“Illinois has chosen a different path. In the face of the humanitarian crisis, our country ensures that children and families do not starve or freeze to death,” Pritzker said. Texas Governor Greg Abbott points to his state’s immigration bus.
