Mayor Karen Bass imposed a regional curfew on Tuesday to restore order after protests defaced landmarks and property damaged in downtown Los Angeles.
When and where is the curfew going?
The curfew takes place from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. in most areas of downtown Los Angeles.
The Curfew Trail is where the merger of Highway 5 to Highway 110 and from 10 highways to where the 110 and 5 are combined. The rest of the city is not subject to a curfew.
The exception to the curfew is limited, for certified members of people in downtown Los Angeles, media, law enforcement and emergency personnel.
Bass said she expects the curfew to remain for a few days and will negotiate before law enforcement is lifted and elected leaders are elected. She said there is a need to curb action that “bad actors who do not support the immigrant community.”
What are the consequences of a curfew violation?
Mayor Bath and Los Angeles Police Chief Jim McDonnell both said the curfew will be strictly enforced and the violation will be arrested.
“I’m exercising my mayoral authority to impose a curfew in downtown Los Angeles,” Bass said. “If you don’t live or work in downtown Los Angeles, avoid the area. Law enforcement will arrest someone who breaks the curfew and you will be prosecuted.”
A LAPD spokesman said that as of 9 p.m. Tuesday, 25 protesters were arrested in downtown Los Angeles for allegedly violating curfew, according to a LAPD spokesman. A spokesman said she expected further arrests throughout the evening as officers worked to clear the remaining protesters in the area.
What events led to a curfew?
Curfews have continued to rise since protests began Friday in response to the Trump administration’s crackdown on immigration in southern Southern California.
Although not arrested by local law enforcement officers on Friday, tensions escalated over the course of the weekend, resulting in attacks of violence, theft, graffiti and property damage to large gatherings.
Police said Los Angeles police were arrested 27 people on Saturday, 40 arrests on Sunday, and more than 100 people were arrested on Monday. Beth announced a curfew at 5:30 p.m., 205 other protesters were arrested
People were arrested for a series of suspected crimes, including failing to disperse, throwing Molotov cocktails at an officer, driving motorcycles into a group of officers, destroying property and robbing.
“Many businesses are now affected by vandalism,” Bass said Tuesday. “23 businesses were robbed last night. If you drive through the city, graffiti is everywhere and has caused significant damage to businesses and many properties.”
Have there been a curfew in Los Angeles before?
During the protests following George Floyd’s murder, Eric Garcetti was in protest, and Eric Garcetti put a citywide curfew in the murder of George Floyd. Then Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva followed suit and announced it would start at 6 p.m. and end at 6 p.m.
The curfew is after most of the peaceful demonstrations in the past few days, clashing with police and police. The move was the first time since the Rodney King uprising in 1992, when such a grand curfew was enacted in Los Angeles.
