Stellantis launches redundancy program at Turin factory
Stellantis started a voluntary layoff program at its Mirafiori plant in Turin, targeting 610 workers as part of a broader workforce adjustment strategy in its Italian operations.
The plan was introduced in other facilities in Italy and aims to promote early retirement and alternative career opportunities for employees, Reuters reported.
According to a company spokesman, the Mirafiori plant will maintain a stable workforce starting in August to prepare for the production of the new hybrid 500.
Production of the new hybrid model is scheduled to start full swing by November.
The voluntary layoffs are part of Stellantis’ efforts to reduce its workforce to as many as 1,600 employees in Italy this year.
Mirafiori workers can join the program until the end of July.
Luigi Paone from UILM is one of the unions that agreed to a voluntary layoff program with Stellantis, saying the program is mainly aimed at workers close to retirement.
Paone added that the program “should pave the way for young workers to recruit.”
Over the past two months, Stellantis has reached similar redundant package agreements at other assembly plants, including Melfi and Pomigliano, resulting in a total labor force reduction of up to 1,660 workers.
The company’s employees in Italy have decreased from 55,000 in early 2021, when Stellantis formed from the merger of Fiat Chrysler and PSA, increasing to less than 40,000.
Stellantis also plans to implement up to 200 voluntary layoffs at its Termoli plant in central Italy, the report said.
This decision coincides with the company’s broader goals in the country, as the union agreed.
