Rashad McCants is a former McDonald’s All-American who continued his basketball career at the University of North Carolina, where he established himself as one of the Tar Heels’ all-time best-nation men, winning the national championship in 2005 and being named the All-American champion twice. His college success led him to be selected by the Minnesota Timberwolves in the first round of the 2005 NBA Draft, ranking 14th overall.

During his NBA career, Minnesota and Sacramento docks averaged 10 points per game, and McCarts became the first draft pick in Ice Cube’s Big3 League. His team won the inaugural title, and McCarts was named the Championship MVP.

McCants previously wrote a book about the exploitation of student-athletes on Monday – Plantation: Exploiting modern athlete studentsBill Belichick competed in the NBA Finals at UNC, with Outkick, with Kevin Garnett, the NCAA transfer portal and more.

Anthony Farris: Because of the current NBA Final tied with a game between Oklahoma City and Indiana, you ended up with the final title and how many games did you see?

Rashad McCants: I have Indiana in seven (games) because (head coach) Rick Carlisle won’t let something happen where (Pacers) don’t have a chance to win, like you’ll see in Game 1. I think OKC’s lack of experience will put them in a compromise game situation, and I think Indiana alone can spread. The (Indiana) fan base can push new stories ahead of the tabloid, rather than pushing OKC to do so by having an MVP (Shai Gilgeous-alexander).

Farris: If you started a team today, were you doing this with SGA or Tyrese Haliburton?

McKent: What type of team preference do you want to build? But now, if I were the winner and I wanted a chemistry team, I would choose Halliburton because he distributed the ball. He shares sugar, making sure everyone is involved. And he is not afraid of shooting the last shot. It has nothing to do with Shai, it has something to do with the strengths of Halliburton being a team-oriented guy.

When Shai Gilgeous-Alexander dominates Game 2 in Game 2, even against the Pacers’ NBA Finals

Farris: You played the first two NBA seasons with Kevin Garnett on the Timberwolves. What was that experience?

McKent: My experiences are completely different from those of everyone else because when he doesn’t wear a mask and he doesn’t perform, I have to see the original elements of him in downtime. Many people can say through their experiences: “This is what he looks like”, “This is how he is”. But if he didn’t let you walk through the door and let you see who he is, you’ll find he’s just a funny guy. He loves to do everything that everyone loves to do, but he is very competitive, very intense and very fun. So if you pass by many little places where he can scare you or scare you, you will find that he is just a funny ass and is as cool as hell…

Farris: Is the hardworking worker as everyone says?

McKent: Absolutely. He understands details similar to Kobe. I think having Kev as my mentor and veterinarian feels like I have Kobe Bryant. I know they were cut off from the same type of cloth and are all my heroes. In terms of competitiveness, details, footwork and all of these things, it’s not a drop at all.

Farris: You have played against Kobe, LeBron, Wade, Arena, etc. Who is the best you can fight against in your NBA career?

McKent: Kobe is the best. I am his college student. But when it comes to talent. (He) is like Bobby Fischer. He’s just one of those guys you have to prepare for two to three days. Outside him, it was probably Vince Carter.

Rashad McCants reacts in court

…It was just that era. You’re talking about a lot of guys (stars) from Paul Pierce to Tracy McGrady to Ray Allen to Dwyane Wade to Michael Redd’s shooting guard and small forward, so it’s hard to identify just one or two guys. But then again, it’s actually really easy, because there’s one guy better than all these guys – Kobe.

Farris: Turning to college track and field, what do you think of the transfer portal? Do you think this is a good thing?

McKent: Whether it is a good or a bad thing, it has no structure. …I think if done right, it could be a good thing, if the child has no right to show up, do nothing and ask for things. There must be a contractual obligation. In order for you to get this money, you have to show up and practice, you have to focus. Now there are some things: boundaries, restrictions. Not only can you make money, but you act like a millionaire and don’t have to perform. In my book, I talk about performance-based requirements and academic-based requirements. If you are going to basketball here, you have to do all of these things before transferring. If you are Caleb Love and want to leave North Carolina for Arizona, well, did you meet all the requirements?

Farris: Did Michael Jordan ever have an open communication line when you were at UNC?

McKent: He is here. That was Michael Jordan, so we didn’t have that opportunity (laughs), but he certainly practices saying hello. He will come back and say hello to everyone, bet we shoot from the half and keep it moving.

Farris: Who won?

McKent: Me, of course.

Farris: You beat Jordan?

McKent: OK, I hit it first (shooting attempt).

Farris: How do you feel as a tar heel, a) Let Bill Belichick be the school’s football coach? b) Now there is everything around you?
McKent: (Laughs) I like Belichick very much. I think UNC’s move was a good move for him. But I think his morale and everything around him (his girlfriend Jorden Hudson) and everything, it’s just a controversy waiting to happen. It’s bigger than ever because if he doesn’t win, it’s the distraction around him and he doesn’t really focus. And, if he does win, it might be too easy. You come to a position in the university. I like the fact that he gave some reputation (the program) in North Carolina. Mack Brown tried it. This is his chance to build something. But Berichick, I just thought…he would be a man. He will be a man and do what you want to do. I won’t tell him not to do this. You know, we all want to do it, but you have to have enough money to do it. If you don’t, you won’t. Cool. But pay tribute to Bill. He was very happy. He lives his own life.

Faris: The last question. Ice Cube’s Big3 returns this weekend. You won the championship in your first season in the league. How much adjustment has it been made from a 5-on-5 full game to a 3-on-3 half court?

McKent: When you talk about preparing for this and half-time difference, your effect will be more difficult because you can expose it faster. Not much help (defense). In a 5-on-5 case, you have two extra people on the court and there is a lot of extra help. You can cut off the court (angle) and have a little rest. However, when shooting with one shot, 3 wins and three minutes, someone gets the rebound, you can throw it (at) the 3-point line and shoot (immediately). So everyone is running around. You have to be in (good) aerobic exercise (shape). This is not what everyone thinks. Absolutely harder than 5 on 5.
