I translated Google to the default value on my iPhone before traveling, which saved me more than once
If you’re traveling abroad this summer, the Google Translate app may come in handy to quickly translate signposts or conversations. The latest Google Translation update allows you to select the app as the default translation app for Apple iPhone and iPads and iPads 18.4 and later on for iOS and iPads. Previously, you were limited to the built-in Apple options.
Google began leveraging AI to boost Google Translate’s products, adding 110 languages last year to increase overall support for 249 languages. Compare it to Apple Translate, which supports 19 languages. Neither Google nor Apple responded to requests for comment.
Both applications offer voice and text translation, including a camera feature that can be translated immediately by pointing the camera to text. Both also allow you to use the translation feature without an internet connection, which can be particularly convenient when heading to more remote locations.
After using both, I found that Google Translate’s speeches were a little faster, so I didn’t have to repeat myself often, and the audio pronunciation was easier to understand than Apple Translate. I switched to Google Translate to default values on iPhone, which is how you do it.

How to convert Google to default values on iPhone or iPad
Converting Google to your default app is easy on iPhone or iPad, as long as it runs iOS and iPadOS 18.4 or higher.
- Download the Google Translate app or update it to the latest version.
- Go to settings on your iPhone or iPad.
- Scroll down to the bottom and select Apps.
- Click the default application at the top of the screen.
- Then select Translation.
- Select Google Translate.
