Vatican said in health update that the pope suffered bronchospasm and “suddenly worsened”

The Vatican said Pope Francis suffered an isolated cough on Friday, which caused him to inhale vomit and require non-invasive mechanical ventilation, and the Vatican encountered setbacks in a two-week long battle.

The 88-year-old Pope always remains conscious and agile and works with movements to help him recover. The Vatican said he has good oxygen exchange levels and is continuing to wear a mask to receive supplemental oxygen.

The episode describes the doctor as “the isolated crisis of bronchospasm,” a cough that Francis inhales vomit. The Vatican said the longer respiratory crisis Francis suffered on February 22 was a breathing crisis.
