A Texas lawmaker spoke after the tragic death of an Air Force Academy cadet who was killed in a crash involving two immigration suspects.

Rep. Beth Van Duyne, Texas, personally sponsored an application filed by 18-year-old Ava Moore to the Air Force Academy, who said the incident would never happen and demanded responsibility.

“I’m still excited about what happened and why,” Van Duyne told Fox & Friends. The Republican lawmaker said she has been in touch with border tsar Tom Homan after the accident and is committed to ensuring justice for the victims’ families.

Moore is a young cadet from Texas, allegedly a kayak hit by a motorboat run by an illegal immigrant. She has been away for a few weeks and has begun basic Air Force training. The Department of Homeland Security reported that two immigrants involved in the crash then fled the scene without help, leaving Moore dead.

DHS has identified the suspect as Daikerlyn Alejandraa Gonzalez-Gonzalez, who is said to have been driving a motorboat while Maikel Alexander Coello-Perozo both entered the United States illegally in 2023 and were released under Biden Administration.

After escaping the scene, it was reported that the suspect had hit two cars while trying to escape. Both were later detained, and after the criminal proceedings, ice immigration detainees began to be removed.

Van Duyne describes Moore as a “firm” leader, and the future prospects of “a wonderful woman”. She said that while she was grateful for the arrest of the suspect, she believed the tragedy could be avoided.

“These two Venezuelan illegal immigrants should never be in our country, they just recklessly sat on a motorboat and ran into Ava when she was going home with her family before she was about to go to the boot camp,” she said.

One of the suspects faces second-degree felony murder, while the other is charged with a misdemeanor of a crash involving damage to the vehicle and obstructing arrest.

Van Duyne said she has been in contact with her family since Moore’s death and her father is in faith during difficult times.
