The Los Angeles Angels placed superstar outfielder Mike Trout on the 10-day injury list after his surgically repaired bone bruises on his left knee Thursday.

The 33-year-old Trout injured his knee in the Angels’ 9-3 loss to the Seattle Mariners when he tried to kick the infield single out of the second baseman Wednesday. He just barely went out and took the right territory for the next half innings, but before the next hit, he was eliminated in the fourth.

“He has bone bruises, so we’re going to put him at Illinois State University,” Angels manager Ron Washington told MLB.com. “It doesn’t matter. But he needs a break.”

After his injury, Trout said he hopes to return to the lineup on Thursday, with the pain just ruptured scar tissue causing soreness.

“When it happened, I knew it was just a weird guy,” Trout said after the game. “But now, after getting treatment and stuff, I should be getting better soon.”

The Trout transitioned from midfield to right before the season to help keep the three-time AL MVP healthy. He played in all 29 games at Angels, 22 of which started in the right field.

The Trout played 29 games last season, before he tore the meniscus and missed the rest of the season.

The Trout has played more than once in 82 games in the past four seasons.

Trout has had a weird season this year. He hit nine home runs and tied for second in Major League Baseball (MLB), but his average hit average was only .179.

Trout’s .179 hit average is much lower than his career hit average.297.

Angels ranked last in Al West 12-18 and hope to climb to the rankings without the 11-time All-Star Game for the foreseeable future.
