The 2025 NFL Draft brought quite a few surprises, but Shedeur Sanders Saga became a controversial topic.
The Cleveland Browns chose Sanders in the fifth round. Shortly after the selection, Sanders went to social media and shared a brief but emotional message: “Thank God.” In the days since then, many figures in the sports world and beyond have shared their thoughts on why Sanders fell behind the draft committee.
The Pro Football Hall of Fame Cris Carter is one of the latest former NFL stars, and it’s a trade-off in the situation in Sanders.

Carter seems to have suggested that Sanders sacrifice tens of millions of dollars without filtering because of his character and overall handling of last week’s draft.

“(Sheduer and his family) think he’s in the same evaluation mode as Eli Manning,” Carter said in a recent “full load” podcast.
“They tried to narrow down the team he was going to? That wasn’t right. Didn’t work out on the combine? It wasn’t the right thing. His interview process. Obviously, he could have done better. A lot of people left the meeting and felt that he was very, very, very qualified.”

NFL legend also postponed the idea that league collusion was to prevent Sanders from becoming a high draft. Carter asserted that the former Colorado quarterback and his family “exaggerated their hands.”
“A lot of things happened. The first thing that didn’t happen was that there was no collusion with the NFL owners,” Carter said. “They wouldn’t be able to keep the secret. They wouldn’t be able to shut up. Every owner was very, very selfish. Now, why would I hurt my thing? For example, if I needed a quarterback, I think it was something he didn’t realize was that those who were in the draft and they were all in the trouble. Their hands were exaggerated.”

Carter does admit that Sanders’ intangibles deserve a first-round draft pick, but he didn’t before targeting the physical characteristics of the quarterback.

“He’s not a big arm. He’s not a big man. His sport is not over-sport. For example, his measurable member is not a first-round measurement game. But he plays football like the first round. … But you’re not playing football all the time. You’re human for the rest of the time.”
Sanders ended the 2024 season with 4,134 pass yards. He is the son of Deion Sanders, the Professional Football Hall of Fame and Colorado Football Head Coach. He will join Cleveland’s crowded quarterback room, which includes Deshaun Watson, Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett and Dillon Gabriel.
