Aryna Sabalenka’s comments were “surprised” by Coco Gauff after the French Open

New crown French Open Champion Coco Gauff said she was surprised by comments from her post-women’s final rival, Aryna Sabalenka, on the grounds that she was underperformed by the Americans’ victory.

Sabalenka, who lost to Gove in the 2023 final The United States opens, After losing at Roland Garros on Saturday, she was so excited that she called her performance the “worst tennis ball” she played in months.

But Sabalenka failed to attribute it to Gauff, saying the victory was due to her poor match.

“I think I’m overly emotional,” Sabalenka said after the game. “I’d say I’m not really dealing with myself very well. So, basically that’s it. I just made the mistake of not compulsory. I think she won the game, not because she played incredible, just because I looked from the outside, like from the outside, like from the Easy Balls.”

Gauff reacted to the comments when he appeared on Good Morning America, explaining that both players had to fight tough conditions in the finals. She said Sabalenka’s speech was “surprised” but she knew the game was thrilled for her opponent.

“Obviously, I knew she might have been a little excited after that game, and it was a tough loss. But, honestly, when I stepped onto the court, I knew the wind. We both practiced the roof closure practice. But when I found out it was open and saw how windy it was on the court, I knew it would be an ugly win.

“I was a little surprised by the comments and everything, but I would give her the benefit of questioning. I’m sure it was an exciting day, an emotional match.”

Sabalenka issued a statement in response to criticism of her comments.

“Yesterday was a tough thing. Coco handled much better than me and she should win,” she said. “She was a better player yesterday and I want to give her the honors she received.”

Gauff suggested there was no bad blood between the two, calling Sabalenka a “fighter” and a “hard opponent.”

Cocoa against Sabalenka is 6-5. Two of the victories have been Grand Slam title.
