Russia launched its largest air attack on Ukraine since the beginning of the war
Kiev, Ukraine (AP) – Russia launched its largest air strike on Ukraine overnight as part of an escalating bombing campaign that further undermines hopes of a breakthrough in the end of a three-year-old war, Ukrainian officials said on Sunday.
The Ukrainian Air Force said Russia fired 537 aerial weapons in Ukraine, including 477 drones and baits and 60 missiles. Among them, 249 people were shot down, 226 were lost, and may have been blocked by electronics.
Yuriy Ihnat, head of communications at the Ukrainian Air Force, told the Associated Press that the overnight shock was “the biggest air strike”, considering drones and various missiles. The attack targeted Ukraine, including western Ukraine, away from the frontline.
The Polish Air Force said on Sunday that Poland and allied countries are scrambling to ensure the security of Polish airspace.
Helson Region Governor Oleksandr Prokudin said a man died in a drone strike. Six people were injured in Cherkasy, including one child, according to regional governor Ihor Taburets.
The war showed no signs of weakening, as U.S.-led international peace efforts have not yet made any breakthroughs. The two negotiations between the Russian and Ukrainian delegations in Istanbul were brief and no progress was made in reaching a settlement.
