Misleading video of Kenyan leaders sharing positions during anniversary protests
On June 25, 2025, Kenya marked the first anniversary of anti-government protests, demonstrators violated parliament. Before the anniversary, videos shared on social media allegedly showed prominent Kenyan leaders, including Vice President Kithure Kindiki, former President Rigathi Gachagua and opposition leader Raila Odinga – Anniversary protests against the plan. However, these claims are misleading. Two of the clips are old and one has the wrong text.

The clip shows Kindiki warned: “I heard that someone is there posting a lot about what they are going to do on Wednesday. Come to see us in the morning.”
He added: “Because this country is not alone, it belongs to everyone. Those who have no protests, this is their country. Even if you, this is your country. Is your country alone?”

“Youth and other Kenyans say they will protest tomorrow,” Odinga said in the clip.
He then read Article 37 of the Constitution, which guarantees every Kenyan’s right to assemble, demonstrate, picket and petition to the public authorities in peace.
He also noted that protesters need to “notify the authorities in advance” and “share details of the starting point, route, final location and time of the protests in the planned,” adding that the police’s role is to “protect protesters, ensure peace, and protect property from destruction.”
