Mexican man allegedly assisted by a Wisconsin judge

(Reuters) A Mexican man briefly evaded arrest with the help of a Wisconsin judge and has agreed to plead guilty to enter the United States illegally.

Milwaukee’s federal prosecutor filed a plea agreement Monday after 31-year-old Eduardo Flores-Ruiz settled the illegal reentry charges filed against him after federal agents sought arrest in Milwaukee Courthouse on April 18.

On that date, he appeared in the assault by Milwaukee County Circuit Judge Hannah Dugan, where prosecutors claimed Dugan misled the agents and escorted Flores-Ruiz to the side to quit to help him escape. The officers arrested him outside the court.

Later, the judge was prosecuted for committing a crime and concealing the person to be arrested. She pleaded not guilty.

Flores-Ruiz is scheduled to appear in court on August 4, under the plea agreement.

His attorney did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Dugan’s lawyer declined to comment.

The case against Dugan took place at the Justice Department after the U.S. Department of Justice, led by Republican President Donald Trump, vowed to investigate local officials who hindered the government’s aggressive immigration enforcement.

Flores-Ruiz was deported in 2013 after his first entry into the U.S. under the plea agreement, and then illegally re-entered the country.
