EU summons Russian diplomats in Vlakivostok to attack Russian envoy
Brussels (AP) – An EU official last month attacked an EU official in the eastern city of Vlakivostok, an EU spokesman said Wednesday. The EU summoned a Russian envoy to seek explanation after an EU official was attacked by an EU official in search of an explanation, an EU spokesman said Wednesday.
Diplomats were attacked on May 26. Their name, nationality and medical status are not provided. German news media Der Spiegel reported that the official was a Romanian woman who was engaged in formal business to the city.
Der Spiegel said the woman was attacked after leaving the hotel after taking a walk in the morning. It said a car was driving up next to her and two people got out. She was threatened and then beaten. The people are believed to have worked for Russian security authorities, the news magazine said.
“We condemn any violence against EU diplomats. They must be able to be free from fear and intimidation,” said EU spokesman Anitta Hipper. “The safety of our staff is crucial and we will continue to review the protection of diplomats.”
Russia’s representative in Brussels was called to “clearance”. No additional details were provided.
