Mitsubishi Fuso Trucks and Buses (MFTBC) in partnership with Mitsubishi Electric, Sufficient and Yamato Transport will launch an EV battery swap program in Tokyo, Japan in September 2025.

The plan includes the launch of more than 150 battery-enclosed commercial trams (EVs) and the creation of 14 modular battery swap stations throughout the city.

The major move towards sustainable transport after a smaller pilot in Kyoto last year will feature MFTBC’s Ecanter light truck and Mitsubishi Motor’s Minicab EV, targeting commercial delivery fleets.

Yamato Shipping will be the first major customer with a focus on the last mile delivery app.

Fample, a U.S.-based battery swap company, will provide technology for electric vehicle platforms and will be responsible for installing and operating the switching stations.

Tokyo Metropolitan Environmental Public Company supports the project through its “Technical Development Support Project to Promote New Energy”, which is aligned with Japan’s climate goals.

Japan’s goal is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 46% from 2013 levels and reach carbon neutrality by 2050.

As the transport sector is responsible for nearly 19% of the country’s batch emissions in 2022, electrification of commercial fleets is a strategic priority for Japan’s decarbonization efforts.

The Tokyo consortium has sold battery life for only five minutes, providing a fully automatic service that allows drivers to exit the vehicle.

Adequate compact and fast-deployed sites are practical solutions for high-margin fleets in Tokyo’s dense urban areas.

Future expansion of the program could include grid services, such as renewable energy storage, to further reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The initiative is based on previous collaborations, since 2022, Amazon transports groundbreaking commercial electric vehicle battery swaps and successful pilots involving commercial delivery and battery swap taxis in Kyoto in 2024.

“Mitsubishi plans to replace battery technology for Tokyo Electric Power CVS” was originally created and released by Just Auto, a brand owned by GlobalData.
