Colombian senator and president have hoped assassination attempts

According to various media reports, Colombia’s right-wing opposition senator and candidate were shot and injured in Bogota on Saturday in next year’s presidential election.

According to media reports, Miguel Uribe, 39, was in critical condition and one person was arrested.

Foreign Secretary Laura Sarabia wrote on social media: “Violence will never be like this…I sincerely hope that (Uribe) is in danger.”

In a statement, his party, the Democratic Conservative Party, said Uribe had participated in a campaign and he was shot dead at about 5 p.m. local time.

Colombia’s assassination attempts have not been seen in Colombia since the age of Pablo Escobar in the early 1990s.

Attorney General Luz Adriana Camargo told Caracol Radio that Uribe is in “intensive care”.

Local media reported that at least one bullet hit the senator in the neck or head.

The left-wing President Gustavo Petro’s administration condemned the attack on Uribe during a campaign in the western part of the capital.

“This violence is an attack not only on his people, but on democracy, freedom of thought and the legal exercise of Colombian politics,” the president said in a statement.

Uribe, a strong critic of Petro, announced in October that he intends to participate in the 2026 presidential election.
