On May 23, Joel announced that he would cancel all shows because he was diagnosed with normal stress hydrocephalus (NPH), which would affect his vision, hearing and balance. According to Yale University, this is a rare condition.
NPH is what happens when cerebrospinal fluid accumulates inside the skull and presses on the brain. According to the Cleveland Clinic, this is most likely to happen among people over 65 years of age. Treating this condition involves surgery to implant a shunt to drain excess fluid from the inside of the skull.
