Before Mike Tyson became a beloved American figure, he was a teenage sabotaged by chaos.
Writer Mark Kriegel, the former Tyson of Tyson, pulls back the boxer’s “apocalyptic” life in his new book, Make Make of Mike Tyson, detailing how he has escaped one of the most compelling public scenes in modern celebrity history.
“His haters, like me, his assistant and Tyson himself could have reached a consensus in the 1980s and late 1990s, and that day he wasn’t long. That day I met him in 2012, and I asked, can you imagine he could imagine he could imagine being 45? He said, no, it’s never happened, it’s never happened, it’s never happened, it’s never happened.

As Kriegel said, Tyson was born in Fort Greene and “growed up on the street.” He made his professional boxing debut in 1985 at the age of 18 and quickly gained a reputation for his strength and knockout ability.
He won 26 of his first 28 games through knockout or technical knockout, and by the age of 20 he became the youngest world heavyweight champion in 1987.

Tyson’s dominance in the ring and his unlimited personality promoted him to popular culture reputation. Donald Trump, then a real estate tycoon and important figure in Atlantic City, New Jersey, also interested in Mike Tyson, played a role in his mainstream success.
“I mean, one thing Trump wants from Tyson is a very sharp business move. He’s the work that Trump needs to take boxing from Las Vegas and move the front to Atlantic City. But it didn’t end up doing that. But it’s the calculation.
“Tyson always has such huge financial requirements.”
“He’s an incredible economic engine, and that’s because of the knockout and the story of Genesis,” Kriegel said.
“And the wrestler calls it a promotion, but when he touches the microphone, like, wait, what did he say?
Donald Trump’s victory brings a tough career and turns him into a “rock” of reality
By 1990, the wheels began to fall and Tyson’s life was in chaos. In 1992, Tyson was convicted of rape and sentenced to jail for the next three years.
After being released, he returned to the ring and won his first post-prison victory in 1995. Four years later, in 1999, he returned to prison and was sentenced to nine months in prison for beating two motorists after a traffic accident.
By 2003, Tyson filed for bankruptcy, reporting that he had $23 million in debt, despite earning $300 million in his career. He launched the “Mike Tyson’s World Tour” to pay off his debts, but the tour was cancelled after an exhibition.
“This little guy is almost universally loved now. How did we get here?”
Tyson’s public pendulum quickly confronted him. In an interview with Brian Kilmeade of Fox News, Kriegel admitted that he was reluctant to write the book, saying that when his publisher came up with the idea, he said, “There’s no way, I can’t be Tyson.”

“I wrote more bad things about Tyson than anyone else. I started thinking. I was an older person. I went through my own stuff. I started thinking about his survivors. Boxing, it was a very dangerous thing to survive. “No dad,” Kilmead interjected.
“Cocaine. No father. His family is the street, as his next-door neighbor told me. Incarcerated, constantly, constantly… it makes me respect this guy. And I think there is a virtue to survive. Finally, there is a man, this man is now a person who is universally and how common we are here. Kriegel asked.
