Russia condemns NATO naval exercises in the Baltic Sea
Russia criticized the Baltic two-week NATO naval exercises as “provocation” on Wednesday, starting the day before.
Deputy Foreign Secretary Alexander Grushko accused the Western Alliance of preparing for a confrontation with Russia along with Russia’s annual Baltops exercise.
“It’s about the advantages in all areas: on land, on sea and in the air,” Grushko told the Russian State News Agency, “Of course, this exercise is extremely provocative.”
“Our assessment of NATO’s military activities is part of preparation for a military conflict with Russia,” Grushko said.
The 54th edition of the Baltops exercise will be held for the first time in Rostock, eastern Germany.
About 50 ships, more than 25 aircraft and about 9,000 soldiers from 17 countries participated in the U.S.-led exercise to be held from Thursday, June 20 to June 20.
Russia is the only country with the Baltic coastline, not a NATO member.
Moscow itself is currently conducting a workout in the region, with more than 20 naval vessels, gunboats and support vessels.
“Practice is underway to test the actions of fleet forces in defending the base,” the Russian Navy said.
According to state television, the exercise began on May 27 and continued until this week.
It involves bays, frigates, small missiles, small submarines and minesweepers, including 25 aircraft, including helicopters, about 3,000 soldiers, and up to 70 specialist units.
