The Department of Justice (DOJ) sent an unprecedented letter to the Brazilian Supreme Court justice in May, admonishing the judges to order the rumble of the U.S. video platform rumbles the voice of users to limit freedom of speech on U.S. soil, and describes the orders as an international over-litigation lacking enforceability.

Rumble, a popular U.S.-based video sharing platform that often finds censorship on other video and social media platforms, is the center of an international battle to protect freedom of speech that has been ongoing for months.

Brazil’s Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes ordered a suspension of rumbles in South American countries in February because the company did not comply with court orders, including deleting accounts of Brazilian men living in the United States and seeking political asylum.

“If you look at what’s going on around the world, it’s clear that we live in a dangerous moment, and for those who believe in freedom of speech, it’s a basic human right, the basic human rights contained in the U.S. Constitution, even the United Nations is recognized globally.”

“In this global free speech struggle, Rumble has become a strong verified fact of our mission. We are honored to be on the frontline of this effort and thank President Trump and his administration for making this battle a priority in foreign policy.”

After the Justice Department sent him a letter in May, Moraes now outlined his reported overturn of U.S. law by the U.S. government’s crosshairs, affecting the First Amendment, Secretary of State Marco Rubio revealed at a congressional hearing that Brazilian judges could face U.S. sanctions.

Moraes ordered Rumble to remove users from its platform because he was accused of spreading false information online and was considered a fugitive from Brazil. Rumble refused and was financially punished for lack of cooperation.

The Justice Department letter dated May 7 and published Thursday argues that Moras’s order cannot be enforced in the United States

“These instructions called rumbles were raised under the threat of currency and other fines,” the letter signed by the Justice Department official Ada E. Bosque read. “We have no position on the enforceability of various orders and other judicial documents directed to rumbles act on Brazilian territory, which is a matter of Brazilian law. However, at the extent of rumbles that take specific actions directly and directly in the United States, we hereby recommend that these instructions are not reliable judges in the United States.”

The Justice Department had no other comments in its letter Tuesday.

Pavlovski described the letter as “unprecedented” and put forward a clear line to foreign countries that they could not try to thwart U.S. law and the First Amendment.

“The letter from the U.S. Department of Justice on the review orders is unprecedented,” Pavlovsky said. “It attracted a bright red line: Foreign officials cannot issue review orders that violate the First Amendment or bypass U.S. law. The scope of this scope is incompatible with the sovereignty of the United States. This is good news not only for Americans, but for free societies around the world.”
