Human remains of 11 people were found on a boat on a Caribbean island

Police have investigated a vessel that rushed shore on an island in the eastern Caribbean Sea, which contains at least 11 human remains in a state of advanced decomposition.
Royal St. Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force (RSVGPF) said it received a report around 10:45 a.m. Monday saying a suspicious ship was found along the coastline of Canuan Island near the Cove and Cherry Hill.
Officials from the Canouan Police Department responded and found the bodies of 11 people on board.
Police said the ship was found in the area 45 feet long, 12 feet wide and 6 feet deep.

The bodies of the people on board are what the police call “advanced decomposition” and some of them are not completely complete.
Investigators took back several passports from the ship, which appeared to be from the West African state of the Mali Republic.
Although the passport has been taken back, police have not formally identified any bodies and an investigation is still underway.

RSVGPF said it is working closely with regional and international partners to confirm the origin of the ship and the identity of the personnel on board.
Thereafter, human remains were transported to St. Vincent Island, where they were detained in the Kingston morgue for further forensic and investigative procedures.
“This incident is worrying and we understand the public’s interest in the matter,” police said. “We assure you that the RSVGPF is taking this investigation with utmost seriousness and sensitivity.”
