Israel listens to Germany’s Melz “because he is a friend”
Israel’s ambassador to Germany said his government was taking Germany’s criticism of the Gaza campaign seriously, and one day later, Friedrich Merz said Israel’s military operations “can no longer be justified by the fight against Hamas terrorism.”
“When Friedrich Merz criticizes Israel’s criticism, we listen very carefully because he is a friend,” Ambassador Ron Prosor told ZDF on Tuesday.
On Monday, Melz spoke at a meeting in Berlin, blasting Israel’s actions in Gaza with rare direct condemnation.
Germany usually takes a more cautious approach when criticizing Israel during the Gaza War.
Mels noted that Berlin must be more restrained than any other country when commenting on Israel, Melz said: “But if the boundaries are crossed and the real violation of international humanitarian law is really violated, then German Chancellor Germany must also say something about it.”
“Frankly, I no longer understand the Israeli army’s actions in the Gaza Strip, nor do I know what their goals are,” he said.
Israel launched another offensive in Gaza, reporting dozens of deaths on war-torn coastal territory every day.
The move sparked international condemnation, warning that two million Palestinians in Gaza are at risk of hunger due to Israel’s recent blockade of humanitarian aid.
Some countries, including Spain, have even surfaced the idea of imposing an arms embargo on Israel on sealed Palestinian territory.
