Norwegian homeowner wakes up and finds a 440-foot boat stranded at his doorstep: “This is a very bulky new neighbor”

A Norwegian man woke up earlier Thursday to find a huge container ship that had been stranded from his fjord side house and he slept.

For reasons unknown yet, the 443-foot NCL Salten sailed to the shore of the fjord near Trondheim in central Norway.

Herberg only found an unexpected visitor, when a panicked neighbor repeatedly hit the doorbell, to no avail, called him.

“The doorbell rings during the day,” Herberg told TV2.

His neighbor, Jostein Jorgensen, said he was welcomed by the sound of a boat heading to land at full speed and running to Herberg’s house at about 5 a.m. local time.

Jorgensen told TV2: “I’m sure he’s out there, but there’s no sign of life. I ring the doorbell several times and nothing…I only manage to contact him when I call him.”

A few hours later, the huge red and green container ship was still trapped near the wooden house, waiting to be restored.

“It’s a very large new neighbor, but it’ll disappear soon,” Herberg said.

TV2 reportedly caused damage to Helberg’s cabin, but the homeowner told the station that it might be worse.

“If the ship hits the rocky cliff next to it, it will lift and hit the house hard,” he told TV2. “There is not much distance.”

The 16 crew members were not injured in the incident and Norwegian police are investigating the cause.

Bente Hetland, CEO of the shipping company that owns NCL Salten, told TV2 that the same ship had been stranded in Hadsel in 2023 and once in Ålesund in 2024.
