We tried several great bags, their features or designs didn’t add up to the top position above. However, everyone is looking for something different in the toilet bag, so while not perfect for us, some of these options are still perfect for you.

Calpak Clear Cosmetics Case costs $85: This clear makeup box (I tested medium size) zippered and slit and folded to reveal the two zipper compartments and a smaller zipper mesh bag. It also looks like a cute little purse with 16 stylish color options, double handles and metal bottom studs. However, the content is not as easy to access as other makeup bags that open from the top, you have to keep the Calpak flat on both sides, which requires a 16 x 10-inch footprint and the fully clear structure is not cautious.

Royce & Rocket Day to Night priced at $58: This set of two structured strap bags proved extremely versatile in our tests, holding up to four (in small pouches) and even 10 (in large) full-size items that can be stored inside the bag or folded on the sides. They are also great for grabbing simple overnight trips or having to share bathrooms. However, there are too many similar options on the market, one-third of the price.

Beis the Dopp kit for $68: I have had the DOPP kit from Beis for four years and this is still my go-to choice for any trip. Multi-canvas material is durable and prone to spotting. Also, I chose the black version to mask the inevitable wear and smaller stains. My favorite thing, though, is the compartment. The water-resistant part is the overall game changer when packaging liquids or perfumes. If something leaks, a quick wipe can get the job done. The waterproof bottom is also a huge benefit when I’m ready to go in the bathroom sink. – Boutayna Chokrane

Nex DOPP $75: Small and large DOPP kits I’ve tested, part of the NEX 2024 Hawaiian series, consisting of a spacious single compartment and double zipper straps. They are made of microfiber leather, a high-quality synthetic leather that is said to be softer and more durable. These bags are stiff and well-structured and when stuffed into my carry-on, they protect my makeup. Microfiber leather has a slight synthetic odor, which is hard to miss as you have to bring your face close to the bag to see the contents in the sponge-like single chamber. I also felt that when the bag was unzipped, the zipper strips were on the road or had to disperse, which took up too much space on my little hotel bathroom shelf. Otherwise, it’s a great option to offer a lifetime warranty and unlimited trade-off plan.

cotopaxi nido accessories bag CadaDía price $45: The decorative small bags of cotopaxi mean not only sanitary items, but also any odds and end points. It is made from shallow recycled Deadstock nylon (so if you carry a glass bottle or anything that needs to be filled, it may not be for you) and weighs 6.5 ounces. Your color scheme will be unique! I like the amazingly spacious 4 liter capacity of three different compartments, which have a large middle compartment for quart size, TSA approved liquid bags and two other compartments with separate smaller pockets. I do have to admit, though, that I like hooks more than loops and that hanging is more convenient, the toilet bag design with a cover is more convenient than the hook design with that hook, and the hook bag design is more convenient than when it is open. – Adrienne

State Bags Benson Toilet Kit, priced at $68: It’s a sturdy, simple bag with three mesh bags and a snapshot/snapshot plastic envelope that can hold items like toothbrushes and toothpaste or showers (such as soap). The Navy version I tested had a coated polyester scrub cleaning look and an interior made from recycled bottles that I liked that it had the option to hang. However, the organization is more basic than similar category bags we have tested and lacks some thoughtful details on other bags in the same price range, such as the quick access bag on the back and a larger hook with a rubber tip to prevent slipping. (This bag is thick, the small plastic hook is not wide enough to hang on the towel rack.)

July hanging toilet bags for $85: I own and love the July carry-on suitcase, so I’m happy to try the brand’s popular hanging toilets. It’s a great design with a zippered pouch on the back, plus a flat body that exposes the PVC and pouches, and a large rubber pointed metal hook to pull it apart. It looks elaborate and stylish with leather trim and full of fabricated hardware, but my husband traveled on a business trip and found that its pockets were actually small, confirming the concerns I was worried about when I tested it in my bathroom at home. If the bag itself is small, that’s not a problem, but it takes up a quarter of the entire carry-on.

Tumi Alpha Bravo Response Kit $155: This sturdy-looking ballistic nylon bag has classic Tumi tracer inside to help you recover your return in the absence of a loss, as well as an antibacterial lining. It can be hung, stand or slung, and has several convenient interior pockets and an exterior zippered pouch. A toilet bag has a lot of money and functions the same as half the price, but if you are a Tumi fan and need a toilet bag to match your luggage, you may be worse than this model.

Fjallraven Kanken toilet bag, priced at $55: I love this, and it makes me feel like the Red Cross nurse on the battlefield of World War II. It is made from the proprietary Fjallraven fabric blend that blends organic cotton with recycled polyester so it feels like a fabric, but is more waterproof and durable. It has a cover shell design with a solid interior plastic hook. My quart bottles enter the huge lower zipper compartment, my toothbrush and deodorant in the top compartment, as well as mesh pockets and Molle webbing to make your tiny items easy to see. However, it’s very large in size, so if you’re a toothbrush and a comb, this may not be for you. – Adrienne

*** Insert Trifold Photh ***

Eagle Creek Pack-It Trifold Toilet Package for $50: Eagle Creek’s travel accessories game is very powerful. Its toilet bag, packaging cube and various organizers are affordable, sturdy and excellently designed, and this toilet bag is no exception. At first glance, it looks like two toilet bags snapping together, but each side untweaks to create a suspension organizer with six compartments. The only problem was that the side of the bag turned the product upside down until it was disassembled, which caused the items in our test to fall off.

Eagle Creek Pack-It Isolated Quick Trip, $25: This small bag is a simple design made from a recycled bottle with zippers on the top and sides. However, its weight and semi-structured shape are perfect for holding a wallet and key in the gym, and even for technical bags for work purposes.

Sympl DOPP Kit, priced at $75: I love the durable Cordura look and hanging clip clips of this bag, and the fact that it comes with a lifetime warranty. The bag opens in a shear hood style to reveal four simple waterproof zipper pockets – two thin and horizontal, a small rectangle and a larger rectangle. This is an interesting idea, but in reality, this severely limits the user as the user is limited to products that fit a specific toilet size for each pocket shape. (My deodorant is not suitable and in some cases, toothbrushes.)

For the bags our team has been using for years, I spent four weeks rotating new toilet bags during my morning routine. I noticed any annoyance or unique details, volume, ease of storing and retrieving items, how much space everyone takes up in the wash basin, how they survive when splashing on water and soap, if the bag can be hung, it’s easy to retrieve items once hung.

During the test, my family happened to have travelled several times and needed to stay in a hotel. We took the different bags and determined how easy it would be to use multiple bags at a time in a tight space if their hook design allows multiple places to hang, and whether the contents are scattered in the bag or otherwise dirt, if so, how easy it is to clean. For my luggage that I couldn’t go on a trip, I lend my friends and family who traveled and took notes to consider my own home test. The review team will continue to use the bag and update this guide for the longevity and other new observations.

What kind of toilet bag do I need?

DOPP kits, cosmetic cases, hanging bags… The differences between categories are not always clear. Here are some of the more common toilet bags you will encounter, as well as considerations for each toilet.

DOPP Kit: Named after the leather artisan Charles Doppelt, who provided the “Dopps” or toilet kit for World War II soldiers. Over time, the “DOPP Kit” has evolved to indicate any kind of portable toilet organizer, but commercially, toilet bags marked “DOPP Kit” tend to be smaller and only accommodate short trip essentials rather than larger foldable hanging bags and cosmetic boxes.

Cosmetics cases: A cosmetic shell designed for those who need more than just essentials is usually a larger box-style container with dedicated compartments for makeup, skin care, hair care and other essentials. They usually come with extra features such as brushes and mirrors.

Hanging toilet bags: The bag, as the name suggests, comes with hooks so that it can be hung on a hook, towel rack, tree or somewhere without taking up space on the counter. Typically, users need to hang them so they can access all storage rooms. The thing to consider is that if everyone in your hotel room has a hanging bag, you can run out of hooks very quickly. All the hooks in our bathroom were almost immediately taken away, so my husband ended up having to hang his bag on the toilet and it wasn’t exciting. A good hanging toilet bag will also have a hook thin enough to slip on almost any hook and tilt the rubber so that it won’t slip off.
