Personalized AI-driven smart replies are coming to Gmail soon

Like it or not, Google’s Gemini AI is entering more workspace applications. In I/O 2025, CEO Sundar Pichai announced that its upcoming Gmail app will have a new feature called “Personalized Smart Reply.” The idea is that, with your permission, Gemini can check your past emails and Google Docs and then help you respond to personal or business-oriented emails.

In one example on the I/O stage, Pichai takes the example of a friend’s road trip to Utah in Colorado, a trip that a friend knew Pichai had been on before. Gemini is able to browse all the comments in the drive, view relevant reservations via email and find itineraries in Google Docs. It will pull all of this together and then draft an email that matches the typical tone, style, and even words that Pichai usually uses.

Starting this summer, all these new features will introduce Google’s Workspace users. While they may be useful to many users, some find Google’s recent Gemini feature added to be invasive and unwelcome.
