NTSB makes first update to Brooklyn Bridge crash

The NTSB has not yet begun interviewing crew members of the 300-foot-long, three-mast crew. NTSB said it is working with the Mexican government to get in the ship and see if it has a record label.

NTSB officials said they will study the status of the engine and hope to talk to the crew about them.

Officials said 277 people were killed and 19 were injured on the ship. Authorities identified one victim as 20-year-old Cadet América Yamilet Sánchez.

Maritime experts say that sometimes when sailors leave the port, the sailors sometimes stand in the yard of the ship, which is believed to have happened to the crash.

“Are the anchor ready? It’s one thing. If the engine continues to face the assistant, is there a procedure to shut down the engine? Of most ships, there are most ships,” said Captain James Staples, a maritime expert who is not involved in the crash.

During a weekly press conference on Sunday morning, Schumer explained that the Coast Guard had a system called “Vehicle Transport Services” similar to the VTS FAA Air Traffic Control.

“There are signs that this service, called VTS, may not be fully or fully functional given the recruitment freeze. We don’t know the answer to that question. We need the answer. If so, the Brooklyn Bridge accident may be a national pioneer and ask for immediate attention.”

Schumer noted that Admiral Linda Fagan released his duties as commander of the Coast Guard on January 21.

“In addition, the Coast Guard is currently recruiting freeze for the Department of Homeland Security DHS, which may limit the Coast Guard’s ability to fully staff on VTS, VTS, vehicle traffic services, cross-shore systems, providing referenced air traffic control to the ocean, especially in New York ports within local areas such as New York and New York,” he said.

The U.S. Coast Guard issued a statement Sunday saying that the VTS “works completely during the incident, managing commercial traffic and promoting safe navigation under established procedures.
