SpaceX’s Texas headquarters Starbase is officially becoming a city

The vote was underway, with a small piece of southern Texas residents favoring Starbucks becoming a real city. The newly designated city is home to SpaceX and its many employees, where Elon Musk’s company builds rocket engines, launches spacecraft and produces other space-related technologies. According to the final vote count, 212 residents voted in favor of including it in the constellation, while six voted against the measure – however, it is worth noting that most of the qualified voters in the region are SpaceX employees, and only 143 votes are required to make Starbase a city.

On X, while the city also published its first post, noting: “Being a city will help us continue to build the best communities for men and women who build the future of humanity in space.” Starbucks’ idea goes back to March 2021, when it was on Twitter. Now that the vote has been held, Starbucks will separate from Cameron County, separating its own city about 1.5 square miles. This designation is particularly important considering SpaceX is scheduling rocket launches. Previously, Musk’s company had to obtain permission from county authorities to close nearby highways or restrict public access to Boca Chica Beach and Boca Chica State Park for rocket launches.

Cameron County election administrator Remi Garza said that while Starbucks is designated as the official Texas city, county commissioners and judges still need to announce the election results of officials. Cameron County Judge Eddie Trevino told Any changes to existing processes that SpaceX must perform are unnecessary.
