Authorities look for missing man after kayaking tilts on a U.S. river

The Placer County Sheriff’s Office said authorities were looking for a kayak Saturday that fell into the U.S. Riverside Water near Auburn, California.
The missing person was on a kayak with another man when their boat capsized on a fast running water under No Hand Bridge near Auburn on Friday night.
Another man arrived at nearby rocks and returned safely to the shore, the sheriff’s office said. The missing person was not sure, and officials said they were not sure whether he was still alive.
“It’s hard to say,” said Elise Soviar, a spokesman for the sheriff’s office. “You never want to give up hope until you know it.”
Authorities began searching for missing kayaks on Friday. She said a dive team was also out on the water on Saturday morning.
While the river may be sunny, authorities say people should avoid getting into the water at this time of year.
“The water is very, very fast, very cold because it comes from the mountains, which is a known dangerous part of the American river,” she said.
The Sheriff’s Office works with Cal Fire’s Nevada Yuba-Placer-Placer unit. According to a social media report from the Placer County Sheriff’s Office, State Parks, El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office and the California Highway Patrol also provided assistance.
