The interruption to the chat is not over yet. Plus: When will the drop of alternatives

If you notice that Chatgpt has less chatting self than Tuesday, you are not alone: the popular AI chatbot from Openai will experience a continuous widespread blackout throughout the day. As of Wednesday morning, the company reported that Chatgpt’s “almost all” components were working properly again, although it also noted that it continued to see “high error rates” for Chatgpt’s voice mode.
Early in the outage Tuesday, OpenAI’s status page reported that the company’s AI system was experiencing “improvements in errors and delays” that it has identified the root cause and is working to alleviate fundamental problems.
Openai’s status page is as of 6:20 am on June 11.
These troubles also undermine access to the OpenAI SORA tool for AI-generated videos, and the company’s APIs used by developers to access backend AI models and their new Codex software engineering agents. Sora returned online later Tuesday morning and the API had fully recovered by noon.
“We have seen a full recovery of the API. We are monitoring and working to fully recover Chatgpt,” PT update released at 12:34 pm.
Openai’s status page is as of 1:30 pm on June 10.
The Descent Detector Service showed a power outage report around midnight as Monday changed to Tuesday and soared a few hours later. (Disclosure: Downdetector is owned by Ziff Davis, CNET’s parent company.)
We are observing an increase in error rate and latency across CHATGPT and APIs.
Our engineers have identified the root cause and are working as quickly as possible to resolve the problem.

Launched in 2022, Chatgpt has become the most popular AI application of all time, with 400 million users per week. With a range of generated AI competitors, including Meta AI, Google’s Gemini and Microsoft’s Copilot, Chatgpt remains the leader, mainly because of its ease of use. At Monday’s 2025 Global Developers Conference, Apple even touted the extension of its Chatgpt integration.
AI chatbots use learning algorithms and large language models to process large amounts of data from books and the Internet and are used to prompt users to provide human-like responses. (Disclosure: CNET’s parent company Ziff Davis filed a lawsuit against OpenAI in April, accusing Ziff Davis of infringing on Ziff Davis’ copyright in training and operating its AI system.)

What should I do when Openai falls?
While Openai’s Chatgpt is probably one of the most popular options, there are a lot of alternatives to use when it drops – many of them free.
Chatbot
According to my colleague Jon Reed, Claude is our favorite chatbot at the moment, and Claude even knows all the details about Chatgpt interrupts.
Image generator
If you rely on Chatgpt’s Dall-E 3 as your image generator, we recommend you try Leonardo.ai for real creative work and Canva for free.
Video generator
If you are looking for an alternative to Sora tools for AI-generating videos, we just looked at Microsoft’s Bing video creators. It’s very easy to use and is now available on mobile devices.
