Colorado Football Program’s recent decision to retire Travis Hunter’s 12th place and Sheduer Sanders’ second jersey has received some criticism. Both former Colorado players’ jerseys officially retired at a special ceremony at the Buffalo Spring Games earlier this month.

Only four other players in Colorado football history have been respected through Jersey’s retirement. Colorado football dates back to 135 years. The standard applies to the retirement of Sanders and Hunter each, which is different from the situation other former players face.

In the 1990s, a student-athletes had to meet graduation requirements before Jersey retired. A sports department spokesperson confirmed to USA Today Sports that Sanders and Hunter had not graduated at the April 19 retirement ceremony.

School officials also clarified that graduation standards have never been formal policies, calling it “a preference for academic consultants.”

Officials added that the athletic department and head coaches can make Jersey retirement decisions at their own discretion.

Michael Jones is one of the latest Colorado footballers, and it is the consequence of the controversial decision erupting. Jones suggested his former college lacked a jersey retirement program directly.

“For them, there is no digital retirement process that is asinine for an agency like Colorado,” Jones told USA Today Sports. “It’s totally asinine.”

Darian Hagan, who plays a quarterback in Colorado, told the media that the controversial retirement decision made him “frustrated”. Rather than discrediting Sanders or the Hunters’ contribution to Colorado, Hagen expressed his belief that he deserved “one day” honor.

Hagen tells the exit that we are always told there is a waiting period. ” “There is a policy. It must be voted on. I have never been told that it is at the discretion of the athletic director or head coach. This is shocking news for me. This is unbearable. ”

Sanders and Hunter played their last game in the Colorado uniform in the Alamo Bowl in late December. The Hunter is the second overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. Sanders’ unexpected decline in last week’s draft has attracted attention throughout the sports world and beyond. Sanders was eventually selected for the fifth round and will start his NFL career with the Cleveland Browns.

Colorado won the national championship in 1990. Jones pointed out the history of the program and suggested allowing Sanders and the Hunter to effectively skip the jersey retirement line, which helped to “severely eliminate our football legacy,” he wrote in a social media post.

Elsewhere, Colorado does have strict policies for the track and field hall of fame.

If you are to be considered a qualified player, the athlete must be removed from his playing career at least 10 years from his playing career at Boulder. According to the nomination documents, individuals must also no longer participate in any professional sports leagues.
