AI continues to extend its reach into our lives, and language learning is next.
This week brought big things to Google and Duolingo in this regard. At the end of Google, the search giant launched a new Gemini Power AI tool for users to learn foreign languages. The experimental function is called the small language course and provides three interactive courses for “personalized language learning”. For example, “small lessons” can help you learn phrases in a specific situation (such as missing passport), while “s-language hanging” can help users learn local languages for less comfortable conversations. Finally, the “word cam” allows Gemini to look at objects in the photo and mark them in the language you learn.

Duolingo, on the other hand, is using Generative AI at full speed. The company announced this week that it will no longer rely on human contractors for “the job that AI can handle”, while also promising to use AI in recruitment and performance reviews. On top of that, Duolingo announced Wednesday that it has proposed 148 new language learning courses using Generative AI, doubled its total course.
The large language models behind Google Gemini and other popular AI tools have proven to be particularly good at translation. Duolingo certainly believes that this technology has huge language learning potential.

Of course, you don’t have to go far to find people on social media’s reaction to the news. On X, some users asked their peers to delete the app to learn with all their might.

Learning another language is an inherent social activity, which is usually done if one wants to interact with others at a deeper level. In fact, language learning usually requires human participation in humans.
Google says it is not about replacing human guidance.
“These experiments are not about replacing traditional research, but about supplements: helping people develop habits, stay engaged and weave learning into their daily lives,” the Google blog post reads.
