A Georgia man is now facing charges from the prosecutor, with loved ones claiming he deliberately did not disclose his HIV positive status to his wife, cancer survivor.

Atlanta News first reported that on Monday, April 21, Cleveland Broadie of Rockdale County was indicted by a grand jury for malicious murder and felony murder in connection with the death of his wife Denise Broadie in 2022.

Denise, 65, said she was diagnosed with AIDS two days after prosecutors claimed it was the result of Cleveland’s “reckless behavior.”

Cleveland has pleaded not guilty to the charge of reckless behavior. According to Atlanta News, he has not yet pleaded guilty to malice and felony murder.

The two media reported that in 2014, Denise was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2017 for three years. After she recovered, cancer first recovered in 2019. After years of treatment, the cancer finally cleared again, but Denise became very ill, which eventually led to a 2022 AIDS diagnosis that died on April 2, 2022.

Cleveland, 62, was later charged with three counts of recklessness in 2023 after other women stepped up and investigators claimed at the time that he knew of his HIV positive condition and had been taking medication since 2006, according to a previous report by Atlanta News.

After the initial allegations in Cleveland, Denise’s family continued to investigate, and as Fox 5 Atlanta noted, hiring private investigators to study his past and prove that he knew his HIV positive status.

Cleveland was initially arrested in July 2023 and booked again on April 16 this year on a new warrant/indictment.

Denise’s daughter, Karen Young, described her mom as the patriarch of a family and until her golden heart, told Fox 5 Atlanta that she believed there was “malice” in Cleveland’s actions. “He can tell her at any time and give her the decision to be with him,” she said. “Not she would have.”

Young, one of Denise’s three daughters, previously spoke with Atlanta News for the first time in 2023, recalling her mother “untreated, undiagnosed HIV” and that her “decline” during her second-departure cancer was “so rapid” that affected her lungs.

“If he just gave her a politeness and just told her to test herself, that might be the case, and she was treated for it,” Young said at the time. “It was almost like God keeping her alive, so we can know what really killed her.”

According to the socket citing her death certificate, she died of pneumonia and respiratory failure, “due to the immunodeficiency syndrome available to human immunodeficiency virus.”

Now, the family encourages others to be tested for sexually transmitted diseases.
