If you recently performed a Google search, there is no doubt that you encountered an AI overview in your search results. Powered by Google’s Gemini, the tool attempts to save you some clicks by summing up information about the links populated in search results and concisely passing on the information you think you need. However, the accuracy of these outlines often has many shortcomings, and the tool has been plagued by hallucinations (with varying degrees of hilarity) since its launch.
Now, Google brings the tool to YouTube, testing an overview of the video version of a handful of YouTube Premium members in the United States in a limited English search query. While Google search results show a text summary generated by LLM, YouTube’s AI overview will be a highlight of some videos.
Google said in an article on the YouTube Community Forum: “This new feature will use AI to highlight clips of videos that are most helpful for your search queries… This is most likely to show more information when you search for the product you are buying (such as “Best “Best Noise Cancel Headphones”), or when you search for more information about locations or searching for these places (such as, where all of them can be accessed (such as, san san forces”san franc’
This raises some questions about the revenue model of creators on YouTube and how AI-generated clip reels affect their revenue. AI Overview The main problem with search is that Google’s own summary absorbs traffic that would otherwise have involved the publication displayed in the search results. Bringing these tools to YouTube could raise the same concerns among video content creators.
Google will collect feedback on these overviews from senior members who can vote for a thumbs-up or thumbs-up on AI-generated highlight clips. Google hasn’t said how long the pilot will last, or whether Google intends to extend YouTube’s AI overview to anyone other than premium subscribers.
