The FBI arrested Wisconsin judge Hannah Dugan allegedly impeded ice sheet agents.
A Wisconsin judge was arrested and charged with obstructing last week’s immigration arrest, FBI Director Kash Patel said Friday.
Milwaukee County Circuit Judge Hannah Dugan appeared in court Friday morning and was released since then, according to the Associated Press. Her next court appearance is May 15.
“Judge Dugan regretted and protested her arrest with all his heart,” Dugan’s attorney Craig Mastanuono said at the hearing. “It’s not for the benefit of public safety.”
In an article on X, Patel said Dugan was arrested for “intentionally misleading” federal agents who came to her court to detain an unrelated court case that would appear before her. It is unclear why Patel deleted his post.
“We believe that Judge Dugan intentionally misled federal agents away from the subject, arrested in her court, Eduardo Flores Ruiz, allowing the subject – an illegal alien – to evade arrest.”
Earlier this week, the Milwaukee Magazine Sentinel reported that the FBI was investigating Dugan’s attempt to “help undocumented immigrants avoid arrest.”
The publication reported that Milwaukee County Circuit Judge Carl Ashley had sent an email to the judges warning them that agents of U.S. immigration and customs enforcement came to Milwaukee County Court on April 18 with an arrest warrant, but his email was not specifically named.
The news outlet confirmed Dugan was arrested Friday morning, noting that Ashley confirmed Dugan’s arrest in an email to court officials.
As Patel said in the deleted post, officials did not formally confirm that Flores Ruiz was the defendant Dugan was accused of providing assistance. Flores-Ruiz, 30, is a Mexican immigrant, facing three misdemeanor counts of battery charge. According to the Sentinel, he attended a pretrial meeting in the Dugan court on April 18.
