The huge gray clouds and “lava fountain” erupt in Italy’s Mount Etna Volcano

Mount Etna, a fanatical volcano of Sicily on the Italian island, returned to life on Monday, spraying hot ash and lava in the volcanic streams, the country’s volcanic monitoring agency said. There are no reports of any risks for local residents, which is used to frequent eruptions or air travel in Etna.
The volcanic ministry, run by the Italian National Institute of Geophysics and Thiologies, pointed out on Monday that the “increasingly intense explosion” said it “almost continuous.”
By noon local time, Ingv Vulcani said in a social media post that “explosion in the southeast crater has become a lava fountain”, and infrared images released by the group showed lava flowing down the mountain.
Videos shared on the Institute’s Facebook page show smoke and ash rising into the clear blue sky.
The volcanic department said the eruption was caused by part of the collapse of the southeastern Etna crater, which released lava flows.
The Associated Press quoted INGV official Stefano Branca as saying the only danger was that the area around the summit of Mount Etna was locked down to tourist groups on Monday. A video posted on social media shows tourists running along Etna as smoke rolls in the distance behind them.
The AP quoted Renato Schifani, head of the Sicily regional government, who said the pyroclastic flow “is no danger to the island’s population.”
Mount Etna is considered to be the most active volcano in Europe and the most active Stratovolcano in the world. Stratovolcano (what many people think when they hear the word volcano) is a cone type, usually with a central crater, which is formed from a layer of lava that has been repeatedly erupted for thousands of years.

Etna has erupted at least once a year over the past few years, sometimes covering nearby towns in a layer of volcanic dust, but otherwise it won’t cause major problems.
