(Reuters) – TESLA CEO Elon Musk has a long history of making ambitious promises and is often late. Many of his biggest ideas are still in progress.
Musk described himself as pathologically optimistic, saying he did eventually deliver “this is important.”
Here are some of Musk’s promises that have been completed and some that are still pending:
Complete autonomous driving technology
Musk’s most famous unfulfilled commitment is Tesla’s efforts to create autonomous driving software. Musk initially talked about autonomous driving capabilities in 2015, saying that autonomous vehicles will be available within three years.
But he missed this deadline, and has promised almost every year since 2020 that Tesla’s vehicles will gain full autonomous driving capabilities. In 2023, Musk called himself “the boy who cried FSD”, which was his goal.
Tesla has said it will release an “unsupervised” version of the FSD, which may not require human supervision in California this year without providing more information.
Affordable Tesla Electric Vehicles Delayed
Musk first announced the mass market plan, which was about $25,000 in 2020, but did not provide details about the vehicle at the time. Reuters reported only last year that Tesla canceled its plans for low-cost cars, sometimes described as Model 2.
Tesla then said it would create affordable cars that would be built on the current product line rather than the new ones previously envisioned. Musk said in April 2024 that Tesla will introduce “new models” in early 2025.
Tesla has said the affordable model will start production in the first half of 2025, although Reuters only reported last week that plans for the affordable Tesla plan include a stripped-down version of its best-selling Y SUV made in the U.S., which will be postponed for months.
Online car recommendation
Musk said that in 2019, his “very confident” Tesla will have the robots operating by 2020. In October 2024, he announced plans for an autonomous robot called Cybercab to start production starting in 2026.
Reuters reported that production of online cars could be damaged as Tesla suspended imports from China after tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump jumped to 145%.
Saibao
Musk launched the Seibert-style pickup truck in 2019 and plans to start manufacturing around the end of 2021. It actually started in 2023.
Next generation sports car electric sports car
The company announced in the second half of 2017 that it would launch a new version of the convertible sports car in 2020. In 2021, Musk promoted the launch of the convertible sports car by 2023 with a global supply chain bottleneck. He said in 2023, Tesla hopes to start producing its extended sports car the following year.
