X’s DM function was renamed “Xchat”

Elon Musk’s stable mission is to remove every trace of Twitter’s previous identity to continue to exist – the next feature on the chopping block seems to be direct information. According to the raucous noise of X staff and independent researchers, the classic DM tab may soon be replaced by something called Xchat.

X’s software engineer Zach Warunek first hints at the change, which responded to user reporting issues that were reported by DM message requests. Warunek said the page will be “deleted soon”. He clarified that the existing DM tabs will be completely removed, not just the requested part.

He supported the theory when Application Researcher and Web Dev Nima Owji reported on X that XCHAT had been used internally by X employees. Based on another X user’s screenshot leak, it seems that XCHAT is positioned as a mature WhatsApp competitor – equipped with encrypted messaging, file sharing (including PDF), disappearing messages, unread status switches, message deletion of message deletion Everyone (not only you) and voice messages (sometimes after startup).

Mixable light speed

If you’re curious, Owji also shared screenshots of Xchat, although we can’t independently verify that it’s true. At first glance, the biggest difference we see is the addition of the PIN verification tab.

The move is in line with Musk’s vision to turn X into an all-in-one platform more broadly. Back in February, CEO X said he eventually planned to stop using phone numbers altogether and instead chose to process all text and calls via X.

Xchat has no official release date yet, but several employees have publicly discussed features on X, indicating that its launch is coming soon.
