Germany evacuates more citizens and families from Gaza

The Foreign Ministry confirmed on Wednesday that the German government has helped 24 German nationals and their close family members leave the embattled Gaza Strip.

According to a Berlin spokeswoman, the group will take buses across Israel and the West Bank to Jordan, where they plan to board a flight to Germany.

She said the evacuation, like previous operations, was in close coordination with the Israeli authorities.

Earlier this month, 19 Germans and their relatives were able to leave Gaza under similar arrangements.

Departure is still rare

Since the Israel-Hamas War broke out in October 2023, it has become increasingly difficult to leave the Gaza Strip (which has been blocked for nearly two decades and has homes of about 2 million people).

It is only possible to set out through a complex and lengthy cleanup process, while Palestinians have slightly higher chances of approval for foreign citizenship.

Evacuation work is underway

The Foreign Ministry said there are still German citizens and their families trapped in Gaza. The spokeswoman said: “The German government continues to work to get them away.”

Much of the Gaza Strip has been in ruins due to the war, which began with a terrorist attack on Israel on October 7, 2023.
