Maine’s Inter-Athlete Policy: After Ruling, the Administration Shoots at Trump
Maine Gov. Janet Mills rioted Monday over the state’s transgender inclusion policy in girls and women’s sports, and said she was “shocked” by the Trump administration’s lawsuit against her state in a fight against federal funding.
Mills appeared on MSNBC’s Morn Morning Joe to discuss her fight with multiple departments in the Trump administration, which began with the state’s refusal to comply with President Donald Trump’s executive order, which prohibits biology of men in girls and women’s sports.
The state did not comply with the order, which started the issue.
“The Constitution requires CEOs to be careful to enforce the law faithfully, not to make laws, not to invent laws or reinterpret the law through tweets or Instagram posts or press releases or press releases or executive orders. He does not allow this.

“So when he reinterpreted Title IX… I support Title IX. I spent most of my career protecting the rights of women and girls in health care, employment, housing credit, etc. I was shocked by his explanation because he could reshape the law.”
Mills recalled letters she received from the Department of Education, the Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Department of Health and Human Services. She put the April 2 letter from USDA Secretary Brooke Rollins “quite shocking” and said it was “a note of ransom”.
In the letter, the government threatened to cut funding in Maine as the state continues to allow biological men in the girls and women’s movements.
“The next day, since there are currently up to two trans athletes playing at Maine schools, they decided to close the funding for our school nutrition program, the school lunch program, which is entirely Maine’s 172,000 Maine schoolchildren rely on their school meals. It doesn’t make any sense.”
She added that litigation against the state was “not rational.”
A federal judge awarded Maine temporary restraining order and ruled that funds must be lifted.

“This temporary restraining order confirms that the Trump administration has not complied with the rule of law when cutting funding for children and vulnerable adults in parenting disciplines,” Maine Attorney General Aaron Frey said in a statement. “The order prohibits the government from illegally freezing Maine’s access to certain congressional grants.
“No one in our Constitutional Republic is beyond the law and we will continue to work to hold that government accountable.”

The USDA “must cancel the freeze immediately and release Maine because Maine allegedly failed to comply with Title IX’s requirements and they have frozen or failed or refused to pay any federal funds,” reads the ruling of District Court Judge John Woodcock.
The government is also “banned from freezing, terminating or otherwise interfering with future federal funds in Maine because of the alleged violation of Chapter IX without complying with the procedures required by law.”
Maine refuses to comply with Trump’s executive orders to ban biological men in girls and women’s movements. Trump initially vowed to refuse to comply with the order in his February 20 speech to cut federal funding.
Maine officials filed a lawsuit against the USDA last week, and the agency decided to freeze funds to the state.

The state accused the USDA of “parenting funds used to feed children in schools, parenting centers and after-school programs and for disabled adults in gathering settings,” the judge agreed. The judge noted that the freezing was due to illegal acts against the title, but it limited the ability to provide[e] Meals for children and disadvantaged adults. ”
Meanwhile, Maine residents have commented on trans athletes in women and women’s sports.
A March poll showed that 64% of Maine residents believed that trans athletes should “absolutely not” or “probably not” to participate in girls and women’s sports. Only 29% of Maine residents believe that trans athletes “probably should” or “absolutely should” compete with girls and women in sports.
The poll also shows that 56% of Democrats in Maine believe that trans athletes should be allowed to participate in girls and women’s sports.
When developing policies to address the issue of transgender participation in sports, the poll shows that 50% of Maine residents want it at the federal level, while 41% think the policy should be kept to states.

Maine is also one of the states warned to pass biological sex or face financial criticality.
