Netanyahu holds talks in Hungary despite ICC arrest warrant
Israeli media reported that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu arrived in Hungary earlier on Thursday.
This is Netanyahu’s first European trip since the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued an arrest warrant. His plan to return to Israel was held on Sunday.
The International Criminal Court in November accused Israeli leaders of committing crimes against humanity and war crimes during the Gaza war.
According to Netanyahu’s office, Netanyahu plans to meet with his Hungarian counterpart Viktor Orbán.
The invitation was extended to Netanyahu shortly after the warrant, which clearly shows that the Israeli Prime Minister will not face arrest by Hungarian authorities.
Although Hungary approved relevant ICC regulations, it does not consider itself bound by its provisions.
Contrary to the usual practice in Israel, details about the visit were not disclosed in advance. When asked, the Hungarian Prime Minister’s Press Office also declined to comment. In viewer attributes confidentiality to the sensitivity of the visit in light of the warrant for Netanyahu.
Netanyahu will meet with Orban and Hungarian President Tamas Sulik on Thursday, according to Israeli media reports.
